Remember back in high school when you were forced to take all those classes you just weren't sure about? Anything from wood shop, to drafting, to sewing was shoved in your face. Okay, so maybe it wasn't forced on you, but you did need the credits to graduate. One of the big ones for me was learning a foreign language.

Learning a foreign language can open doors to great opportunities and it can expand your understanding of other cultures as well. The task of taking on a new mode of speech can pose some great challenges and many obstacles. With enough effort you can achieve excellent progress in this arena.

Many people know that acquiring speaking skills is best done during a person's childhood. As we get older learning a foreign language becomes more challenging. Our minds are more receptive when we are young and we are wired to learn communication skills. As those skills are acquired we lose much of our learning potential. This is because we have simply passed that developmental stage in our lives.

One example of how this works is accents. If you are learning a foreign language before the age of twelve years you will most likely not have a pronounced accent. However, if you are learning a foreign language after the age of twelve years old you will have a pronounced accent. Developmentally, your mind is too attached to the way that you have already learned to speak. Your mind is not receptive to the new way of talking.

This is definitely not to suggest that learning a foreign language is impossible as you get older. There are methods that a student can use to acquire another language no matter how old or set in his ways he is. Practice, study and rote memorization are not really enough when it comes to learning a foreign language fluently.

Many suggest that the best way to learn a new language is to visit a country where the new language is spoken. The student has an opportunity to delve into the way that the words are used. He can gain an understanding of the rules of grammar, sentence structure and proper pronunciation as well.

Note: Things can certainly get tricky when it comes to learning a foreign language. These days they say everyone should learn Spanish because so many Hispanics are flooding into our country. However, is it reasonable to ask every other foreign to learn Spanish, when they've already learned English after moving to the states? Seems a bit bizarre. I certainly don't expect to move to Mexico and demand that everyone learn English. In reality if you plan to move somewhere, you should probably learn the language.

Learning a foreign language through entering a new environment like this helps the student gain a better understanding of other complex elements of communication that are not commonly introduced to the classroom. Figurative language and poetic elements used in everyday speech can be confusing. Someone learning a foreign language will tend to take things quite literally. Through observation in real life situations the student can understand the more subtle factors in communication.

Not everyone can fly to a new country just in the efforts of learning a foreign language. There are ample opportunities for students to work with people who speak the desired language as their native tongue. Some online courses connect students who are learning a foreign language with tutors who are very helpful in giving their pupils real life interaction. This is one of the best approaches to learning a foreign language.
